A045: Creating surreal worlds. Conversation with Erik Johansson

Unexpected connections between things are usually a good way to start an idea. The moon, the night and ladders are the things that keep coming up in my work.

Erik Johansson, photographer and visual artist from Sweden, has been creating surreal photographs for over 16 years. Focusing on personal projects and exhibitions, Erik’s approach to photography is unique in that he seeks to capture ideas rather than moments. Using his camera and imagination, he strives to create a single, realistic image that tells a story, even if it contains elements that seem impossible.

In this episode we talk about Erik’s latest works and unravel some interesting secrets about creating surreal images. Much of his working process involves post-production and combining photographs, but he also makes an effort to capture as much as possible on location. This often involves building props and carefully planning the shoot.
